Teaching Watercolour

As an Art Instructor with U3A

I'm honoured to be invited by U3A (The University of the Third Age, Malaysia) as art instructor for watercolour painting classes since 2018. U3A is a program under the “Lifelong Learning for Older Malaysians” project started by Prof. Dr. Tengku Aizan Hamid, Director, Institute of Gerontology, Universiti Putra Malaysia. The project was supported by the Government of Malaysia and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) [Country Programme Cycle 2008 – 2012].

As art instructor for adults who come from various academic and professional background with different level of art knowledge,  teaching becomes challenging and yet interesting for me. As U3A is driven on the philosophy of “learning for leisure”,  the teaching of watercolour painting is not solely emphasized on the mastering of techniques or skill. Instead, it should act as  lifelong learning initiative for the elderly to enjoy togetherness, happiness and positive energy through the beauty of art.

Watercolour is an attractive medium that enable us to enjoy its unexpected, spontaneous and amazing results by just mixing water with watercolour paint. Although it has a reputation for being a difficult medium to learn, a wide range of effects could be achieved through repeating practices, effort and learning. Hence, it is a popular medium for beginners.

Teaching members of U3A is always a happy moment for me. I treat every lesson a joyful and meaningful gathering where i could have chatters beside sharing knowledge for enlightenment. From indoor classes to outdoor en plein air sessions, improvement and laughter from my adult students are always my momentum towards creating better art pieces. Through teaching art, it is part of my social responsibilities and contribution back to society as well.

4 years In MyArt, JB...

I moved to JB (Johore Bahru) in 2005. JB, the capital city of the most southern state of Peninsular Malaysia, Johore. Life in the first year here was lonely as most of my relatives, friends and art activities are based in Kuala Lumpur. There was not many art activities here and hardly could find an art gallery in the city. I have no choice but have to stay since my hubby's HQ has stationed him here in the branch office. A bit struggle in the beginning in looking for something that i could do to earn a living here to support life and commitments besides continuing making paintings.

In 2006, i unexpextedly met ai choo while attending a dinner hosted by a friend of my hubby. Ai choo, a friend that i had met once in 2004 during an art exhibition in JB. My part time career started from this meeting. She then invited me to teach in her newly open art centre named MyArt Central.

I work from Friday to Sunday, conducting sketching, water colour, oil painting, and secondary school SPM examination classes. A lot of students including school children, teenagers, youngsters, school leavers, art lovers, retirees have attended my classes. They come in and out during these four years, some have become my good friends, some left for further study and for brighter future and others just lost in contact.

Time passes quickly,i have been teaching in MyArt for 4 years and now have to stop for my next move to Japan. Special thanks to ai choo and partners of MyArt Central for giving me a chance to learn, to meet friends and to participate in various enjoyable activities such as outings, art camp and tour, holiday workshops and lots more. Heartfelt thanks also go to all my colleagues and my students cum friends who have supported and trusted me in delivering my knowledge to them. Thanks for showing me your patient, confidence and hardwork in making artpieces. Classes with laughter and noises will always on my mind.......
THANKS YOU to all of you who i've ever known and met in MyArt.....
